Dinosaur Town-Hisey Park-Granger

I didn't give Granger nearly enough time. I stopped at Hisey Park to see the dinosaurs and the volcano bathrooms, only to realize there are dinosaurs scattered all over town. This deserves a return trip—and a proper Dino Drive. Granger proudly calls itself “Where the Dinosaurs Roam,” and the unusual theme began as part of an effort to revitalize the small agricultural community. After woolly mammoth bones and tusks had been discovered in local clay pits, residents embraced a prehistoric theme. In 1994, Granger's Public Works crew created its first dinosaur—a baby Brontosaurus made from wire mesh and concrete. They kept building. By 2019, the city counted 33 dinosaurs, with many gathered at Hisey Park and others scattered around town. Visitors can follow the Dino Drive to hunt for them. Hisey Park is home to more than two dozen dinosaurs, a plesiosaur rising from the fishing pond, the community amphitheater, and one particularly committed piece of prehistoric architecture: public bathrooms built inside a volcano that was originally designed to erupt with steam.
