Face in the Ground-Smith Cove

You have to look at this one from just the right angle, but once you see the enormous face emerging from the asphalt, you can't unsee it. Around 1969, 19-year-old Robert Larkin Chollar was at the beach when a truck dumped a load of hot asphalt nearby. He decided to turn it into art, sculpting the giant head by hand in roughly two hours. The work was hard on his hands, but the spontaneous creation survived. Chollar went on to become a professional sculptor, and decades later his unexpected piece of public art is still here. This one was recommended by a Found Washington follower—and it's exactly the kind of wonderfully strange thing that's easy to miss even when it's right in front of you.
