This is a working sculpture with a powerful vacuum. One of Spokane's most iconic public art pieces has been happily eating trash since Expo '74. Designed by local artist and nun Sister Paula Mary Turnbull, the steel Garbage Goat uses a hidden vacuum system to "eat" small pieces of litter, turning cleaning up into a game. Created as part of the environmentally themed World's Fair, the sculpture quickly became a favorite with generations of visitors. It even sparked controversy when dairy goat farmers protested the idea that goats eat garbage! Today, the Garbage Goat remains one of Riverfront Park's most beloved attractions—and one of the most memorable ways to throw something away.
