Maybe one of the most magical places I have enjoyed. It's like an enchanted mermaid pool in Never Neverland. Bring a flashlight. Hidden behind the Gorge Powerhouse in Newhalem, Ladder Creek Falls and Gardens becomes an illuminated forest after dark. Cross the pedestrian suspension bridge over the Skagit River, pass the eerie green glow of the powerhouse and follow the garden trail and stairs alongside the falls. Colored lights reveal the waterfall one tier at a time. Seattle City Light superintendent J.D. Ross developed the gardens as a place where nature, electricity and spectacle could come together. The original attraction included elaborate plantings, colored lights and music. The modern LED light show continues that unusual legacy. The gardens are open year-round, and Seattle City Light currently lists the lights as operating daily from dusk until 11 p.m. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and wear shoes with good traction—the trail is extremely dark, with steep stairs and potentially wet surfaces. A damaged bridge currently prevents visitors from completing the full loop, but the illuminated falls can still be viewed by returning the way you came. Free to visit. No parking pass required.
