Don't drive through Pomeroy too quickly. Along this quiet stretch of Highway 12, oversized figures, old signs, gas pumps and unusual vehicles start appearing on both sides of the road. It feels like stumbling across pieces of an older era of American highway travel. The most noticeable is Rainbow Man, a roughly 22-foot-tall vintage Muffler Man. These giant fiberglass figures became famous as attention-grabbing roadside advertising beginning in the 1960s. This particular giant traveled through several states before arriving in Pomeroy in 2018, where he later received his colorful rainbow makeover. Nearby is a Uniroyal Gal, another classic fiberglass advertising figure, originally created to promote Uniroyal tires. She reportedly arrived in Pomeroy around 2021. The giants are surrounded by a changing collection of vintage advertising signs, old gas pumps, vehicles and other pieces of roadside Americana. There have been additional giant figures here over the years, so what you find may be different from older photographs online. This is roadside viewing rather than a formal attraction; admire anything behind fences from public areas and respect private property.
