One of the most beautiful cemeteries I have been in. This headstone is so easy to find. Right inside the gate and take a right. One of Washington's most recognizable and thought-provoking graves, this X-shaped monument was designed by Sterling Hallard Bright Drake years before his death. Rejecting the traditional cross, Drake filled the stone with symbols and messages that reflected his beliefs, including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and an engraved rocket named Excalibur, honoring his lifelong interest in rocketry. His beloved schnauzer, Lady Guinevere, is also memorialized on the monument. Perhaps the most poignant detail is that one face of the monument was intentionally left blank. Drake planned to add one final inscription but never chose the words before his death in 2018. Today, the memorial stands as one of the most unusual—and deeply personal—headstones in Washington.
