I went looking for an unusual roadside rocket in Arlington, Washington, after a follower recommended it. But when I parked, I discovered something even more curious: an old-fashioned telephone switchboard with a rotary phone, dangling cords, and a mystery waiting to be solved. At first, I wondered if it was some kind of wind phone. Then I picked up the receiver, and a recorded operator began giving me instructions. After some trial and error, I managed to connect all five cords correctly, and an entire section of the switchboard swung open! Inside was a hidden Little Free Library filled with books and other treasures. Known as The Switchboard, this elaborate gadget geocache has an extraordinary backstory. The original took two years to build but was destroyed in an arson fire after just nine months. Its creator spent another nine months rebuilding it, with supporters recognized on a plaque inside Switchboard 2.0. What I thought would be a quick stop to photograph a rocket turned into one of my favorite unexpected discoveries. Visitor tip: Pick up the receiver and follow the instructions. Don't spoil the puzzle for yourself! Please treat the installation gently and leave it ready for the next curious visitor.
