At the end of Taylor Street, a complete 42-foot gray whale skeleton hangs above Union Wharf. Nicknamed Gunther, the whale washed ashore near Port Ludlow in 2019. After a necropsy, his bones were cleaned and reconstructed through a multiyear community effort. The outdoor display is free and accessible 24 hours a day—and illuminated after dark. Interpretive signs tell Gunther’s story and explain the unusual rise in gray whale deaths along the Pacific Coast.
