I always make a call at a windphone. Tucked inside Wippel Park, Ellensburg's Wind Phone offers a quiet place to say the words left unsaid. Inspired by the original Wind Phone created by Itaru Sasaki in Japan, these disconnected telephones have appeared around the world as places where people can speak to loved ones who have died, process grief, or simply pause for reflection. The Ellensburg Wind Phone was installed in May 2024 by Keely Murphy Pickerel and collaborator Chris Shambacher. Its keeper dedicated it to Keely's brother, Brendan Murphy. As the nearby plaque explains, the phone has no religious affiliation—it's simply a physical reminder that sometimes it helps to say the things still on your heart. Whether you have someone to remember or are simply curious about the growing Wind Phone movement, it's a peaceful and meaningful stop.
